SEO and Website Performance
SEO.
The practice of improving your website so that it appears higher in search engine results when people search for what you offer.
In plain English
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. In plain terms, it is the work you do to help Google and other search engines understand what your website is about, trust that it is a good source, and show it to the right people at the right time.
Every day, people type questions and phrases into Google. They are looking for services, answers, products, and information. Google's job is to return the most relevant, most trustworthy results for each search. SEO is how you make sure your website is one of those results.
It is not advertising. You do not pay Google to appear in organic search results. You earn that position by building a website that meets Google's standards for relevance, quality, and experience.
SEO in digital marketing covers three broad areas of work.
The first is on-page SEO. This is everything on your actual website pages: the words you use, how you structure your headings, whether your content directly answers what people are searching for, how you write your page titles and meta descriptions, and whether your images are properly labelled. On-page SEO tells Google what each page is about.
The second is technical SEO. This is the behind-the-scenes health of your website. How fast it loads. Whether Google can crawl and index your pages. Whether it works properly on mobile. Whether your Core Web Vitals scores are strong. Technical SEO removes every barrier that might stop Google from reading and ranking your site.
The third is off-page SEO. This is your reputation beyond your own website. When other credible websites link to yours, Google treats those links as votes of confidence. The more quality links pointing to your site, the more authority Google assigns to it.
When all three work together, SEO does something that paid ads cannot sustain on their own. It builds a system that drives targeted traffic to your website consistently, without you paying for every single click. A well-optimised page can bring in visitors for months or years after it is published, as long as the content stays relevant and the site stays healthy.
That compounding return is what makes SEO one of the highest-leverage investments a business website can make.
Why it matters for founders and Nigerian businesses
Most people looking for a service start with a search. They do not ask around first. They do not scroll social media waiting to see your ad. They open Google and type exactly what they need.
If your website does not appear in those results, that potential client finds someone else. They never knew you existed.
SEO is how you change that. It positions your website in front of people who are already looking for what you offer, at the exact moment they are ready to make a decision. That is a different quality of attention than anything a boosted post or banner ad can buy.
For a service business especially, strong SEO does not just enhance visibility. It drives targeted traffic that converts into real enquiries, real clients, and real revenue.
