    Web Hosting.

The service that stores your website files on a server and keeps your site live and accessible on the internet around the clock.

    In plain English

Web hosting is a service that stores your website files on a server and allows you to publish your website on the internet. Without it, your website does not exist online. Think of it this way. You build a house. That house is your website. But a house needs land to sit on. Web hosting is the land. When someone types your web address into a browser, their device sends a request to the server where your website is hosted. That server responds by sending back your files — the pages, images, text, and code that make up your site. All of that happens in a few seconds. A web host is a company that owns and manages those servers and hosts websites for clients. You pay them a monthly or annual fee. They keep your files stored, your server running, and your site accessible to anyone on the internet at any time. Web hosting is a cloud service. The server your files sit on is not a physical machine in your office. It lives in a data center somewhere in the world, maintained by your hosting provider, connected to the internet at all times. Most people who build websites will encounter three main types of hosting. Shared hosting puts your website on a server alongside other websites. VPS hosting gives you a dedicated portion of a server with more resources and control. Dedicated hosting gives you an entire server to yourself. For most small business websites, shared hosting or managed WordPress hosting is enough to start.

Why it matters for founders and Nigerian businesses

Every website needs hosting. That is not optional. But the quality of your hosting affects everything that comes after it. If your hosting is slow, your website loads slowly. A website that loads slowly loses visitors before they even read the first line. Google also uses page speed as a ranking factor, which means slow hosting can quietly push your website down in search results. If your hosting goes down, your website goes down with it. Potential clients who visit during that window see nothing. Existing clients cannot reach you. The right web host keeps your website fast, secure, and available. That is the baseline every business website needs before anything else.
