    SEO and Website Performance

    Core Web Vitals.

Three performance metrics that Google uses to measure the real-world experience of visiting your website, and that directly affect where your site ranks in search results.

    In plain English

Core Web Vitals are a set of performance metrics defined by Google to measure real-world user experience on a webpage. Not how the page looks. Not what it says. How it feels to load it and use it. Google introduced Core Web Vitals as an official ranking factor because they understood something most website owners miss: a slow, unstable, unresponsive website frustrates visitors before they even read a word. And frustrated visitors leave. Google does not want to send people to pages like that. There are three metrics that make up Core Web Vitals, and each one measures a different part of the loading experience. The first is LCP, which stands for Largest Contentful Paint. This measures how long it takes for the largest visible element on your page, usually your hero image or main headline, to fully load. A good LCP is 2.5 seconds or less. Anything beyond that and visitors start feeling the wait. The second is INP, which stands for Interaction to Next Paint. This measures how quickly your page responds when a visitor clicks a button, taps a link, or interacts with anything on the page. A good INP is 200 milliseconds or less. When a page feels sluggish to tap and click, this is the metric that captures it. The third is CLS, which stands for Cumulative Layout Shift. This measures visual stability. If you have ever been reading a page and the text suddenly jumped because an image or ad loaded late and pushed everything down, that is a layout shift. A good CLS score is 0.1 or less. Higher than that means your page is moving around on visitors while they are trying to use it. Together, these three web performance measurements give Google a picture of what it actually feels like to visit your website on a real device, on a real connection, in the real world. You can check your scores using Google's PageSpeed Insights tool at pagespeed.web.dev. It will show you your current LCP, INP, and CLS scores and flag exactly what is causing problems if your scores are poor.

Why it matters for founders and Nigerian businesses

Speed is not a nice-to-have for a business website. It is the first impression. A visitor who clicks your link and waits three seconds for your page to load has already started forming an opinion. If the page then shifts and jumps as images and ads load in, that opinion gets worse. Most of them leave without reading a word. Google tracks all of this. A poor Core Web Vitals score tells Google that visitors are having a bad experience on your site. Over time, that works against your rankings. A fast, stable, responsive website keeps visitors long enough to read what you offer. That is the foundation every other marketing effort depends on.
