Web Development and Technology

Frontend.

Everything a user sees and interacts with when they visit a website or application, built and controlled by frontend development.

In plain English

The frontend is everything the user either sees or interacts with when they visit a website or application. The text, the images, the buttons, the navigation, the forms, the animations, the layout, the colours. If a visitor can see it or click it, it is frontend. Frontend development is the development of the graphical user interface of a website. It is the discipline of taking a design and turning it into a working, interactive experience in the browser. A frontend developer creates the user-facing side of websites and applications by writing code that the browser reads and renders as a visual interface. The three core languages of frontend development are HTML, which provides the structure and content of a page, CSS, which controls the visual styling and layout, and JavaScript, which adds interactivity and dynamic behaviour. Modern frontend work often also involves frameworks like React, Vue, or Next.js, which make it easier to build complex, fast-loading user interfaces. Frontend is the layer or element that the user has the ability to use, see, and interact with directly. It is the graphic user interface where a website or app can be operated by users. Everything happening on the other side of that interface, the database queries, the authentication logic, the server processing, is backend territory. The distinction matters because frontend and backend require different skills, different tools, and different ways of thinking. A frontend developer is focused on the user experience: how things look, how they feel to use, how fast they render, and how they respond to different screen sizes. A backend developer is focused on what happens when the user takes an action and data needs to be processed, stored, or retrieved.

Why it matters for founders and Nigerian businesses

Frontend is what your clients and customers experience. No matter how sophisticated the backend, if the frontend is slow, confusing, or broken on mobile, the user leaves. The quality of the frontend is the quality of the product in the eyes of the person using it. For a business website, strong frontend execution is what turns a design into something that actually converts visitors into clients.
