A/B Testing.

A method of comparing two versions of a web page or element to find out which one performs better with real visitors.

In plain English

A/B testing, also called split testing, is a method employed to compare multiple versions of a single variable to determine which one produces a better result. In web design and digital marketing, it is the practice of showing two different versions of a page, a headline, a button, or any other element to different segments of your audience at the same time, then measuring which version drives more of the action you want. The name is straightforward. Version A is the original. Version B is the variation. Real visitors are split between the two versions, usually randomly and in equal proportions. After enough visitors have seen both, you compare the results. Whichever version produces a higher conversion rate, more clicks, more signups, more purchases, becomes the new standard. Then you test again. What makes A/B testing valuable is that it replaces guesswork with evidence. Designers and marketers often disagree about whether a red button or a green button converts better, whether a short headline or a long one is more compelling, whether showing a price upfront helps or hurts. A/B testing answers those questions with actual data from actual visitors, not opinions. Almost anything on a web page can be A/B tested. Headlines, CTA copy, button colour, hero images, form length, page layout, testimonial placement, pricing presentation. The discipline is to test one variable at a time so you know exactly what caused the difference in results. Tools commonly used for A/B testing include Google Optimize, VWO, and Optimizely. At a simpler level, most email marketing platforms include built-in A/B testing for subject lines and send times. Landing page builders like Unbounce and Instapage also include testing features as part of their core functionality.

Why it matters for founders and Nigerian businesses

Every assumption you make about what will work on your website is a hypothesis. A/B testing is how you find out if you are right. Small improvements in a single element, a headline that converts three percent better, a CTA that gets clicked more often, compound into significant revenue differences over time. The businesses that grow their conversion rates consistently are almost always the ones that test consistently.
