    Conversion and Marketing

    Conversion Rate.

The percentage of website visitors who complete a desired action, calculated by dividing the number of actions by total visitors.

    In plain English

Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who complete a specific desired action on a website or in a marketing campaign. The formula is straightforward: clicks or actions divided by total visitors, expressed as a percentage. If 100 people visit a landing page and 5 of them fill out a contact form, the conversion rate is 5 percent. The desired action varies depending on the goal of the page. On a landing page, it might be submitting an email address. On a services page, it might be clicking a WhatsApp link. On an e-commerce product page, it might be completing a purchase. Whatever action the page exists to produce, that is what conversion rate measures. Conversion rate is one of the clearest indicators of how successful your company's digital marketing is at driving conversions. Traffic tells you how many people arrived. Conversion rate tells you what happened after they got there. A high-traffic website with a low conversion rate is a leaking bucket. You are spending money and effort bringing people in, but the experience or the message is failing to move them to act. A lower-traffic website with a high conversion rate is often more valuable in practice, because every visitor it attracts is being converted at a meaningful rate. Conversion rates can vary widely depending on the industry and the marketing channel. A paid ad landing page for a service business might convert at two to five percent. An email campaign sent to an engaged audience might convert at ten to fifteen percent. Comparing your rate to industry benchmarks is useful, but the most important comparison is always your own rate over time as you test and improve. The discipline of improving conversion rates is called conversion rate optimization, often shortened to CRO. It involves testing headlines, CTA copy, page layout, loading speed, trust signals like testimonials and guarantees, and every other element that influences whether a visitor acts or leaves.

Why it matters for founders and Nigerian businesses

Conversion rate is the metric that connects your marketing investment to your business results. Every improvement in conversion rate multiplies the value of every visitor you already have, without spending more on ads or SEO. A one-percent improvement in conversion rate on a page that gets 1,000 visitors a month means ten more enquiries every month. Compounded over a year, that is 120 additional opportunities, from the same traffic you already had.
