MVP

MVP in Software.

An MVP is the simplest version of a product that lets you test your idea with real users. Learn what it means, why it matters, and when to build one.

In plain English

What Is an MVP in Software? An MVP, short for Minimum Viable Product, is the earliest version of a product that has just enough features to be used by real customers and to generate feedback for the team building it. The goal is not to launch something perfect. The goal is to learn fast. You build the smallest thing that works, put it in front of real users, and find out what is actually worth improving before you spend more time or money. The term was made popular by the Lean Startup methodology, where learning is treated as the most important outcome of any new product cycle. Instead of spending months building everything you imagine, you release a focused version and let the market tell you what matters. A good MVP solves one real problem for a specific group of early adopters. It does not need to look polished or handle every use case. It just needs to prove that someone will actually use what you are building. For founders and product teams, the MVP is a risk management tool as much as it is a release strategy. FAQ What does MVP stand for? MVP stands for Minimum Viable Product. It is a version of a product with just enough features to be used by early customers and to start collecting real feedback. Is an MVP the same as a prototype? No. A prototype is usually a visual or functional mockup used for internal testing. An MVP is a real, working product that actual users can interact with and that delivers genuine value, even if limited. Who invented the concept of an MVP? Eric Ries popularized the MVP concept in his book The Lean Startup, drawing from earlier work by Steve Blank. The idea is central to the Lean Startup approach of building, measuring, and learning in short cycles.
