CRO.

Improving a website or app so more users complete a valuable action.

In plain English

CRO stands for Conversion Rate Optimisation. It is the process of improving a website, landing page or app so that a higher percentage of users complete an intended action. A conversion is not always a purchase. It can be submitting an enquiry form, booking a consultation, creating an account, starting a free trial, downloading a document, subscribing to a newsletter or completing a payment. CRO begins by deciding which action matters and measuring how often users complete it. The team then studies where users hesitate, become confused or leave. This may involve reviewing analytics, watching session recordings, speaking with customers, testing forms and examining the steps in a conversion journey. Possible improvements include making the offer clearer, strengthening the call to action, simplifying a form, improving page speed, removing unnecessary steps, answering common objections or making the page easier to use on mobile devices. A/B testing is one CRO method. It compares two versions of a page or element to see which performs better with real users. However, not every website has enough traffic for a reliable A/B test. Smaller websites can still improve conversions through user research, usability testing, customer feedback and careful measurement before and after a change. CRO should not focus only on increasing a percentage. A change that produces more low-quality enquiries, accidental clicks, refunds or unhappy customers may not be a real improvement. The conversion being measured should support the actual goal of the business and provide a good experience for the user.

Why it matters for founders and Nigerian businesses

CRO helps a business get more value from the visitors it already attracts. Improving the percentage of suitable visitors who enquire, register or buy can reduce the need to depend entirely on increasing advertising or search traffic. It can also reveal problems that traffic reports alone do not show. A page may receive many visitors but still perform poorly because its message is unclear, its form is difficult to complete, its price is confusing or its call to action does not match what users need. CRO works best when conversion rate is reviewed alongside lead quality, revenue, customer satisfaction, retention and other business outcomes. The aim is not to pressure more people into clicking. It is to make the path to a useful action clearer and easier for the right users.
