BVN and NIN Verification.
Checking a person’s identity details against Nigeria’s BVN or NIN records.
In plain English
BVN and NIN verification is the process of checking identity information supplied by a user against records connected to Nigeria’s Bank Verification Number or National Identification Number systems.
A BVN is used to identify customers across Nigeria’s banking system, while a NIN identifies a person in the National Identity Database managed by the National Identity Management Commission.
During verification, an authorised service may check whether the number is valid and return or confirm identity details linked to it. Depending on the service and permissions available, the application may compare information such as the person’s name, date of birth, phone number or photograph with the information entered during registration.
For example, a financial application may ask a user for a BVN or NIN and then check whether the returned name and date of birth match the account being created. The application must still decide how close the information must match and what should happen when there is a spelling difference or outdated record.
BVN or NIN verification is not the same as authentication. Authentication checks whether someone can access an account. Identity verification checks whether information about that person matches an authoritative identity record.
A successful check also does not automatically prove a person’s address, income, creditworthiness or suitability for a service. Additional checks may be required depending on the product and its regulatory obligations.
Not every website or application needs to collect a BVN or NIN. The requirement depends on the type of service, the organisation’s licence, the account or wallet tier and the rules of the relevant regulator.
Businesses should use approved verification channels or authorised providers. They should not collect BVNs, NINs or returned identity details merely because the information might become useful later.
Why it matters for founders and Nigerian businesses
BVN and NIN verification can help organisations reduce impersonation, duplicate accounts, identity fraud and the use of false customer information.
For regulated financial products, verification may also form part of customer identification, Know Your Customer and anti-money-laundering processes. The precise requirement depends on the organisation, product, licence and account type.
BVNs, NINs and the personal information returned during verification must be handled carefully. Nigerian data-protection law requires personal data to be collected for a clear and lawful purpose, limited to what is necessary, kept only as long as required and protected against unauthorised access or disclosure.
An application should therefore explain why the check is needed, avoid exposing identity numbers in logs or URLs, restrict staff access, protect data during transmission and storage, and retain only the information genuinely required for the service.
NIMC provides identity-verification services for checking identities against the National Identity Database, while BVN validation is supported through authorised banking and identity-validation infrastructure.
