Web accessibility means designing and building websites, web applications and digital content so that people with disabilities can use them without unnecessary barriers.
An accessible website should work for people who may be blind or have low vision, deaf or hard of hearing, unable to use a mouse, sensitive to motion, living with a cognitive disability, or using assistive technology such as a screen reader, voice-control software or switch device.
Web accessibility is often shortened to a11y. The abbreviation uses the first and last letters of “accessibility,” with the number 11 representing the letters between them.
What does an accessible website include?
Accessibility is not one feature or plugin. It comes from decisions made across design, content and development.
Common examples include:
Adding useful alt text to informative images
Making menus, forms and buttons usable with a keyboard
Using sufficient contrast between text and its background
Writing clear link labels instead of vague text such as “click here”
Adding captions or transcripts to video and audio
Using properly ordered headings
Associating form labels with the correct input fields
Showing clear error messages when a form cannot be submitted
Avoiding flashing content and unnecessary motion
Allowing users to zoom or enlarge text
Using semantic HTML instead of making every element a generic container
Keeping keyboard focus visible as someone moves through the page
Ensuring important information is not communicated by colour alone
For example, a sighted visitor may understand that a red outline means a form field contains an error. A colour-blind visitor or screen-reader user may not. An accessible form also provides a written error message and connects it to the affected field.
How do people use accessible websites?
Different users interact with websites in different ways.
A blind user may rely on a screen reader to announce headings, links, buttons, form labels and image descriptions. Someone with limited hand movement may navigate entirely with a keyboard, voice commands or a switch device. A user with low vision may enlarge text or apply custom colours. Someone with a cognitive disability may benefit from simple language, predictable navigation and clear instructions.
Accessibility does not require every user to experience a website in exactly the same way. It requires the important information and functions to remain available through different methods of interaction.
What is WCAG?
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, usually called WCAG, are internationally recognised guidelines for making digital content more accessible.
WCAG groups accessibility under four principles. Digital content should be:
Perceivable: Users must be able to recognise the information being presented.
Operable: Users must be able to navigate and interact with the interface.
Understandable: Content and controls should behave clearly and predictably.
Robust: Content should work reliably with browsers and assistive technologies.
These principles are sometimes shortened to POUR.
WCAG has three conformance levels: A, AA and AAA. Level AA is a common practical target for organisations, although the appropriate requirement depends on the project, organisation and applicable laws.
Passing an automated accessibility test does not automatically mean a website is fully accessible. Automated tools can find issues such as missing alt attributes and some colour-contrast failures, but human testing is still needed to evaluate keyboard journeys, screen-reader behaviour, confusing instructions and real task completion.
Is accessibility the same as usability?
Accessibility and usability are related, but they are not identical.
Usability asks whether a product is easy and effective for its intended users.
Accessibility asks whether people with disabilities can access and operate the product without being excluded by its design or code.
A checkout page may be easy for a mouse user but impossible for someone navigating with a keyboard. It may therefore appear usable during ordinary testing while still being inaccessible.
Does web accessibility help SEO?
Accessibility is not a shortcut to higher Google rankings, and meeting WCAG does not guarantee that a page will rank.
However, several accessibility practices overlap with good website structure and user experience. Descriptive headings, meaningful link text, text alternatives, semantic HTML, transcripts and understandable navigation can make content easier for users and systems to interpret.
Accessibility should still be implemented primarily because people need equal access to information and services—not merely as an SEO tactic.
When should accessibility be considered?
Accessibility should be considered from the beginning of a website or product project.
It is easier to choose accessible colours, structure headings properly, label forms and build keyboard support during design and development than to repair an inaccessible product after launch.
Accessibility should also be checked whenever:
A website is redesigned
A new feature or user flow is introduced
A design system is created
Forms, payments or account areas are added
Videos, documents or interactive content are published
A third-party widget or plugin is installed
Accessibility is an ongoing responsibility rather than a one-time checklist.
Why it matters for founders and Nigerian businesses
Web accessibility prevents people with disabilities from being excluded from information, products and essential digital services.
It can also improve the experience for people using small screens, slow internet connections, temporary injuries, older devices or difficult environments. Captions, for example, help deaf users but are also useful when someone cannot play audio. Keyboard access supports people with motor disabilities but can also help experienced users complete tasks faster.
Accessibility requirements also vary by country, industry and organisation type. Businesses serving international markets, public bodies, educational organisations and companies working with regulated clients may have specific legal or procurement obligations. Organisations should check the requirements that apply to their users and market instead of assuming that one standard covers every situation.
Most importantly, accessibility is part of building a responsible product. A website has not fully completed its job when part of its intended audience cannot read its content, submit its forms or complete its main actions.
